On Wednesday morning, February 15, 2012 the Westport Woman’s Club organized a meeting at Westport Town Hall to kick off the next fundraising goal for the Westport Warm Up Fund. Members of the Woman’s Club sent out a mailing of over 600 letters to the Westport businesses community in support of the Warm Up Fund. This fund helps qualified Westport residents stay warm in their homes during the winter season. The Warm Up Fund supports additional heating assistance after a resident’s state energy award is exhausted. Although it has been a mild winter the Department of Human Services reports that 246 Westport households have applied for heating assistance.

Last year Westport residents benefited with over $57,000 in Warm Up funds thanks to generous community donations and the United Way support to the Westport Warm Up Fund.

The Waiting in the Wings Cabaret launched the 2012 season with an evening of Broadway and Jazz Classics performed by rising New York performers Andrew Keltz and Andi Alhadeff. Accompanied by a full band, the duo sang solo and duets that entertained a full house at the opening show. Bedford Middle School students, Brandon Rakowski and Zoe Samuels brought some hometown flavor with their performance of You’re the Top.

“It was a great evening,” said Mary Lee Clayton, Westport Woman’s Club President. “Guests had the opportunity to enjoy appetizers, compliments of Matsu Sushi and Blue Lemon, and have a glass of wine while watching the show. All proceeds go to support the Westport Woman’s Club Student Scholarship Fund.” Additional shows featuring new performers are in the works for March 17 and April 28.

Special thanks for the evening to go to Castle Wines and Spirits for providing wine and to the Community Partners participating in the Scholar Dining Dollars program: Bobby Q’s, Blue Lemon, Da Pietro’s, Matsu Sushi, River House and Rizzuto’s.

Last year, many of you participated in the Home Energy Challenge by signing up for a CL&P sanctioned Home Energy Solutions visit. As a result, you earned over $330 for the Club coffers, the Club came in first in the Challenge competition winning a $500 prize and , best of all, many of you have been able to save on your utility bills.

Those of you who didn’t participate last year once again have the opportunity to do so. Just having the $75 audit can help you save up to 8-10% on your energy bills. And as, before, each completed energy audit will earn the Club $25 and give us an opportunity to add to the $500 prize we have already won.

By calling (203) 200-0626, HEC will answer your questions and help you schedule an audit. Make sure to mention that you were referred by the WWC

Please consider signing up. Its good for you , the community and the environment.

Lisa Wexler, award winning creator of The Lisa Wexler Show, the most popular talk radio show in Fairfield County, CT, spoke to the Westport Woman’s Club at the February 6 Club Day Luncheon.

Ms. Wexler, a talk radio host, attorney, advocate, author and public speaker, she is a master at communicating information in an entertaining way.

One of her passions is to bring greater visibility to a news topic she believes is underreported. The privacy policy that Google plans to put in place on March 1 is one such topic. Per Ms. Wexler, while an individual’s privacy is legally protected with regard to things like personal “snail” mail and history of what books you check out of the library, privacy of email and search history (among other things) through Google, will no longer be protected. She encouraged her audience to become familiar with the new Google policy and how it will affect them.

The Connecticut Press Association gave The Lisa Wexler Show top prize as Best Radio Show in Connecticut in 2011. You can hear the show every Monday – Friday, 4-6 PM at AM 1230 WFAS as well as via internet streaming on lisawexler.com.
