Our award winning Garden Department had its beginnings in 1910 when the then Woman’s Town Improvement Association sponsored a children’s competition for the best flower. However, it was officially established in 1939 when it was inducted into the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc.
The Garden Department continues to hold monthly meetings for the education of its members in horticulture and conservation projects and sponsors programs and flower shows for the education of the general public. Prize- winning projects of the Garden Department include the “Greening of the Post Road” and Canal Green Park.
Our Garden Department was the winner of the Second National Award in an Environment Improvement Program sponsored by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc., and was a pioneer in ecology in the 1970s.
The Garden Department continues to emphasize preserving and protecting the environment. A perfect example of its work can be seen on the grounds at our beautiful home. Members of the Garden Department enjoy informative guest speakers, field trips to farms and nurseries, an annual luncheon and the all- important Holiday Boutique Sale in December. The Holiday Boutique Sale provides an opportunity to participate in workshops where one can learn lifetime crafts, create items for sale, and help decorate our beautiful Clubhouse for the Holiday Season.
The Garden Department closes its season with the YDF plant sale. Many of the plants come from our members’ own gardens. Gardening skills are not required. Refreshments at meetings are provided on a rotating basis by members of the Department. Check with the chair for the current activity fee.
